How much equity are you sitting on?

Hi—this week I want to talk about something a lot of homeowners overlook: the equity building quietly in their home. Here's what you need to know.

Equity Building

Your home is probably worth more than you think

If you've owned your home for a few years, chances are you've built up meaningful equity—the difference between what your home is worth and what you owe on it. That equity is real money sitting in your property, and it can work for you in several ways: you might refinance into better terms, borrow against it for major expenses or improvements, or simply feel more secure knowing you own a bigger piece of your home each month. The catch is that many homeowners don't know their current equity position because they haven't had their home valued recently. If it's been a while since you last checked, I'd encourage you to get a rough sense of your home's value today. It might open up options you didn't realize were available to you.

Let me know if you'd like to discuss how your equity could be working harder for you.

Tip of the Week

Inspect your attic insulation. Proper insulation reduces heating and cooling costs and can prevent ice dams on your roof.

Tips for Homeowners

Fall Home Prep: Heating, Safety & Systems

1.

Have your heating system serviced before it's needed. A furnace failure in winter is an emergency — routine maintenance costs far less than emergency repairs.

2.

Test smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors and replace batteries. Carbon monoxide poisoning risk rises when heating systems run more frequently.

3.

Drain and shut off exterior faucets and sprinkler systems before the first freeze to prevent burst pipes — one of the most expensive and disruptive homeowner emergencies.
