Refinancing Basics

When it makes sense to refinance your mortgage

A lot of people ask me: should I refinance? The honest answer is, it depends on your situation. Refinancing can make sense if your financial picture has changed—maybe your credit improved, your home gained value, or you want to adjust your loan term. The key is weighing the costs of refinancing against what you'd actually save. Sometimes the math works out great. Other times, staying put is smarter. That's why I always recommend running the numbers before you commit. If you've been thinking about this, I'm happy to walk through what refinancing might look like for you and whether it's worth pursuing.

Let's talk about whether refinancing makes sense for your home.

Tips for Homeowners

Year-End Tax & Mortgage Planning

1.

Consider making your January mortgage payment in December to get an extra month of deductible interest in the current tax year (consult your tax advisor first).

2.

If you plan to sell next year, now is a good time to document improvements — receipts and records add to your cost basis and reduce taxable capital gain at sale.

3.

Review your W-4 withholding if you bought a home this year — your mortgage interest deduction may mean you're having too much withheld from each paycheck.
