Refinancing Basics

When refinancing makes sense (and when it doesn't)

Refinancing isn't right for everyone, and that's okay. The real question is whether a new loan would meaningfully improve your situation. Sometimes lower rates justify the process; sometimes your current mortgage is already solid and switching costs more than you'd save. The math depends on how long you plan to stay in your home, your current rate versus what's available, and the fees involved. I've seen homeowners save thousands by refinancing—and I've also talked them out of it when the numbers didn't work. That's the conversation worth having. If you've been wondering whether a refinance could benefit you, I'm happy to walk through your specific numbers without any pressure or surprises.

Let's talk through whether refinancing makes sense for your situation.

Tip of the Week

Inspect your attic insulation. Proper insulation reduces heating and cooling costs and can prevent ice dams on your roof.

Tips for Homeowners

Fall Home Prep: Heating, Safety & Systems

1.

Have your heating system serviced before it's needed. A furnace failure in winter is an emergency — routine maintenance costs far less than emergency repairs.

2.

Test smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors and replace batteries. Carbon monoxide poisoning risk rises when heating systems run more frequently.

3.

Drain and shut off exterior faucets and sprinkler systems before the first freeze to prevent burst pipes — one of the most expensive and disruptive homeowner emergencies.
